A STRONG RUN TO END THE YEAR AT 34 RACEWAY
(September 5th, 2017) Saturday night was Season Championship at 34 Raceway in Burlington, IA. We missed 4 nights but were still 8th in points and therefore would start 8th in the A-Main. The night started off with heats and we started 6th in the 2nd Heat. At the drop of the green, Dean was a little patient with a couple squirrels in front of him and this allowed the top 3 to get away slightly. Once Dean was able to maneuver around the two slower cars, he was a couple car lengths back from 3rd place. Dean kept the LG2 by Owens glued to the top side but could never gain any more positions and finished in 4th after the completion of 8 laps.
Eight of the regular Modified guys also ran a Gamblers Challenge which had a $25 entry fee, with winner take all. We would draw the #2 for the 8 lap race. The track was still fast and around the top and it would be a race to turn 1. Well we lost that race as the guy on the pole slid up the track going into turn one and that’s all it took. We would hang on for 2nd crossing the checkered, but it didn’t pay anything except some knowledge as we tried a couple things and it seemed to work.
For the 20 lap A-Main, we would start from the 8th position. Not a bad starting spot, but a few cars in front of us would be hard to get by. Once again, at the drop of the green, Dean was very patient and didn’t take any chances. He would drive into 6th and then began to set his sights on the top 5. With a couple laps in the books, the first yellow of the race would come out. We would restart in 6th and on the next restart, we would spin going into turn 1. A car came from the top to the bottom and instead of Dean taking that car out, he spun himself to avoid the accident. This would force the H7 to 17th position at the rear of the field, and now had 15 laps to get back to the front. Methodically, Dean began to pick off some cars and with some luck because of guys taking each other out, we would be back in the top 5 with a handful of laps remaining. After a restart, McGee worked his way into 3rd and began to set his sights on the top 2 and finding a good groove on the bottom side of the raceway. A late race caution would help out McGee as he was now on the bumpers of the top 2 and looking for more, but could never clear 2nd place and would finish in 3rd as the checkered flag waved after 20 laps. With a top 3 finish, everyone was on edge after the finish because of the early race mishap. Once again a fast car, but 3rd is all we could get out of it. It was still a good run and we gave the fans some excitement during those last 15 laps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bykXsZBntlo
