ANOTHER UP AND DOWN WEEKEND FOR THE TEAM
(August 23rd, 2017) Friday, August 18th was another night of weekly racing with Sprint Invaders in Donnellson, IA. With heavy rains just before hot laps, we were hoping that the Sprints would help blow the track off, but they couldn’t. The track stayed narrow and heavy for most of the night and it made for a long night for us. In the heat, we started outside front row and that would actually be the bad place. The pole sitter pushed McGee up into the really wet stuff and he would get a bad start coming to green. This also allowed the 3rd place guy to sneak under both and McGee fell back to 3rd. Dean would eventually rally back and grab 2nd place back on the white flag lap and keep it there when the checkered flew. For the 20 lap A-Main, McGee would roll off from the 3rd spot but knew he needed to get to the top since the track had a cushion and was fast around the top. McGee would once again get a bad start as the pole sitter didn’t take off and the H7 would fall a couple spots at the start. With the track being hammer down around the top, McGee didn’t push the issue and took what he would get and that would be a 7th place finish when the checkered flag dropped after 20 laps.
With Lee County Speedway and the bad night in the rear view, The Team was looking to rebound at 34 Raceway on Saturday night, August 19th. With a good field of modifieds, McGee would start 4th in the 2nd heat. The track was once again muddy and fast since the Sprint Cars were on the card as well. This time, McGee would take the outside start to his advantage. At the drop of the green, McGee followed the p2 starter out of the gate and quickly moved into the 2nd spot. For the first 3 laps, McGee would shadow the leader, waiting for him to bobble or come off the top of the track since passing was minimal. McGee finally got his chance, as the leader bobbled in turn 3; McGee turned the car down inside of him and made the pass down the front stretch. From there, McGee would extend his lead and go on to win the 8 lap heat by a comfortable margin. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxzRVeyepIw
With the IMCA invert, McGee would roll off on the grid from the 6th spot for the 20 Lap A-Main. The top was a valuable place again as McGee quickly took advantage and moved into the 4th position with a couple laps in the books. As McGee was looking for 3rd a little bobble let the eventual winner get by on the outside. A lap later, McGee was looking under 3rd and the P3 guy spun sideway hitting the right side of the H7 and in the process putting that car back in the right direction and the race went out. With some damage, McGee proceeded on and was looking for the top 2. As the race went on, the car seemed to get worst. With a couple restarts, McGee would have to start on the bottom and could never get a run to make a clean pass on the top 2. With a late race restart, the p4 car would jump the start and McGee could never recover to get back by him and this would result in a 4th place finish after 20 laps.
With August quickly coming to an end, a lot of tracks are starting to close down for the year. We will be at Donnellson this Friday for their Season Championship. We have missed 4 nights there and we are sitting 5th in points. We don’t know if they will start straight up by points or by invert. Then we will look to pick up the $1000 check at Burlington on Saturday Night. Thank you to all of our great supporters for their support this year. We will look to have some good runs this weekend!
